What you’ll discover below:
September is a month of change. As summer fades and autumn edges in, the flowers and plant materials available offer a wealth of seasonal treasures. Some are fleeting – but all deserve their moment in the spotlight.
Here are our experts’ top five cut flowers for September – some you know well, others you may have overlooked – but all are standout choices you’ll want on your workbench, ready to bring colour, texture and freshness to your designs.
#1 Callistephus | Asters
Whether you know them as Callistephus or (China) Aster they’re available with strong long stems and a widening selection of colours and varieties.
Most of the Callistephus chinensis cut flower range comes from the Matsumoto series. Whilst they’re part of the daisy family, these blooms are anything but understated and rightly deserve a place in many designs – especially in bouquets.
Below we share five popular colours, but this is by no means all the selection available. There are many other varieties in Apricot, Blue, Light Blue, Pink, Red, Rose, Scarlet, and Yellow, and that’s before we discuss the bicolour range.

Callistephus Asters Matsumoto Dark Pink
Callistephus Asters Matsumoto Light Blue
Callistephus Asters Matsumoto Pink
Callistephus Asters Matsumoto White
#2 Amaranthus
There’s nothing quite like Amaranthus and now is the very best time of year to really appreciate and get your hands on the selection available. Whilst commonly known as love-lies-bleeding, there are now many more varieties than the traditional red trailing type – and we’re not just talking about upright Amaranthus.
Below we show just nine different varieties, but give you a glance at some bi-colour beauties, upright and semi-upright stems, a range of colour tones, the most popular, and the funky spider forms.
We would ask which is your favourite, but the beauty is you don’t have to choose just one, especially not in September when a wider range is available. They truly deserve their place in the top 5 flowers for September and we encourage you to enjoy them to the max.

#3 Symphoricarpos | Snowberry
Symphoricarpos, or Snowberries, are unlike any other berry. Their naturally arched stems are covered in clusters of berries, making them ideal for adding seasonal shape and playful texture to designs.
Bridging the gap between summer and autumn, they come in shades from fresh green-white through to deep pink, with every tone in between.
They may not be your first thought for September’s top five cut flowers, but we believe they truly earn their spot.
Symphoricarpos Magical Red Riding Hood
Symphoricarpos Magical Ruby Fall
Symphoricarpos Magical Pride Pink
Symphoricarpos Magical Temptation
Symphoricarpos Magical Lemon Lime
#4 Dianthus barbatus
Dianthus barbatus is the cousin of the well-known Dianthus, better known as the Carnation, but the barbatus deserves just as much attention. Many remember Sweet Williams from childhood as the archetypal garden flower, but this variety has been around for far longer. The Dianthus family is recorded as one of the oldest cut flowers known.
Although they’ve been around for some time, today we have a wide range of commercial varieties, many of them new to the market.
We’ve shared just a small amount of the wide selection of varieties available, but have tried to show some of the colour selection. Sweet Williams are available in white, pink, magenta, red, burgundy, purple, lavender, not to mention a wide selection of bi-colours.
That’s without taking into consideration the playful all green Dianthus barbatus such as ‘Green Trick’, Green Queen, Green Wicky, Lady in Green, and Kiwi Cool, the list goes on!
#5 Hypericum
How many different varieties do you use?
Hypericum are available year-round, but in some months the range is wider. Quite frankly, they also deserve to be celebrated – and September is the perfect month to shine a spotlight on them.
There’s no shortage of colours available within the range of Hypericum. There are many series that can be selected. Our friends at Marginpar have the Flair® range. The Romance® selection is available from the Floral Chain Group of growers, but we’ve showcased the Coco® collection from our Florius Flowers. Take a few moments to allow the images to scroll through and appreciate how there is a Hypericum to work with every colour scheme.
The names of each variety can be found by hovering over the scrolling images. Alternatively, tap on the images, to open them in a lightbox, with the names shown under each image as you swipe or tap to move to the next.
Now you’re reminded of the wider selection of varieties across flowers and materials – not only suitable, but sensational for September.
