What you’ll discover in ‘5 Top Cut Flowers for March’:
#1 Flowering Shrubs
There are simply too many spectacular Flowering Shrubs to pick just one for our 5 Top Cut Flowers for February. How could we possibly choose between Syringa and Viburnum Roseum, let alone Prunus blossoms?
Within the Flowering Shrubs category you’ll discover seasonal treasures which are only available for a limited time, making them even more special and desirable.
Where to find them?
You’ll find our full selection listed in our webshop under ‘Berried / Flowering Shrubs’.
#2 Spring Bell Bulbs
Here we’ve grouped together three different types of spring bulb flowers to bring you a selection that are nothing short of stunning.
Muscari
Muscari are available in 25 – 30cm stem lengths. Their flower heads generally look very similar, but can differ in colour, they are available in:
- Blue – with varieties including Carola, Emmie, Alida
- White – with varieties including White pearl and Casablanca
- Off white – very pale blue variety Manion
Leucojum aestivum
Within the cut flower industry we generally refer to Leucojum aestivum as Snowdrops. However, in the gardening realm their common name is spring snowflake, or snowflakes.
To the untrained eye they may seem to be the same flower – which can have considerable benefits and allows Leucojum aestivum to be used and interchanged for snowdrops (Galanthus) – however, Leucojum aestivum are generally considerably taller 40 – 45cm, with multiple flowers per stem.
Scilla
The commercial Scilla can be divided into two main groups:
- Scilla Peruviana – a larger flower with heads between 5 – 10cm in height and diameter, with stem length generally between 40 – 50cm
- Scilla Blue Bells – what we might consider Spanish Blue bells (Scilla hispanica although now generally reclassified as Hyacinthoides hispanica). These available in blue, white, and pink. The cut flower stem lengths are generally 35 – 40cm
#3 Mimosa
Acacia
While there are many types of Acacia, including beautiful foliage varieties, this month, we’re focusing on the show-stopping Mimosa flowers. Their fluffy, golden pom-poms and sweet fragrance make them unmistakable.
Mimosa truly heralds the arrival of spring and works so beautifully with special design this month. It is a traditional symbol of International Women’s Day on the 8th March. It a favourite of many Mums too, so ideal for Mother’s Day on the 15th March this year.
We’ve got to mention Easter too, although not this month, Mimosa and Easter designs go hand-in-hand so perfectly.
Whenever you choose to use it this season, make sure to enjoy all it has to offer!
#4 Exotic Flowers
Whilst Exotic or Tropical flowers might seem an odd choice for March (especially when there is a plethora or wonderful spring flowers available). We’re highlighting them for a very good reason. Mid March sees – for many florists – the busiest weekend of the year; Mother’s Day!
Adding some Showstopping exotic flowers to some designs will elevate them above the competition and provide a more unusual element. They also add a touch of luxury and have an excellent vase life.
The benefits continue as they are very often more reasonably priced and also sold in smaller quantities than you might think – a win win!
Will you share a touch of the tropical?
#5 Painted Fresh Foliage
Fancy a ‘pop’ of colour in your designs? Many of these foliage would, similarly to the exotic flowers, add a different element to Mother’s Day designs, but would be right at home in designs throughout spring and summer.
There is a wide range of painted fresh foliage (or Green Painted as you’ll find them listed in the webshop). Because they’re so visually impactful they offer great cost efficiency, they last very well and most dry very well too. All-in-all, if you’re yet to embrace coloured foliage, perhaps March is the month to begin!
Bonus Flower - FRENCH Tulips!
So what's the difference?
We could not resist drawing your attention to French Tulips. Whilst tulips gained a top spot in our ‘5 Top Cut Flowers for January’ list, French Tulips stand head and shoulders over standard tulips – quite literally!
Some main differences include:
- 60, 65 & 70cm French Tulips are the norm, making them an easy addition to a whole load more designs than their standard counterparts might not be.
- You can buy French Tulips in their wraps of 10 from Westflor Flowers London. If you’re buying directly from our Flowers Holland list you may need to buy 30 stems (3 wraps of 10).
- To be clear it’s not just the stem length that is taller when it comes to French Tulips; the overall flower is proportionally larger too, meaning their head size is as equally impressive as their stem length. Don’t be fooled by how they may appear in webshop images, or even on the shop floor, they will open and knock your socks off!
