What you’ll discover in ‘5 Top Cut Flowers for April’:
#1 Lily Of The Valley | Convallaria
Do you consider Lily of the Valley to be an April flower? Especially when we consider how commercial flowers are generally available earlier than we’d see them flowering in gardens. However, Lily of the Valley is certainly no longer the preserve of a few months!
Did you know Convallaria is
Available all year round!
Whilst we’re huge advocates of celebrating seasonal flowers, it would be remiss of us not to highlight that Lily of the Valley or, Convallaria to give it it’s Latin name, is available year-round!
There’s a dedicated Dutch Grower that commit themselves to the production of this delicate flower throughout the entire year.
We appreciate it’s a specialist flower, one that many florists won’t promote, however, that doesn’t stop this much loved flower being requested by customers. So, next time you’re asked for it you’ll probably be able to fulfil their request. That’s if they don’t mind the price tag! Of course, you can always review this online or ask us for more information.
#2 Alliums
The selection of Alliums is quite mind-boggling, not just the range available, but their diversity. It was hard for us choose a ‘small’ selection of varieties to share with you, but here’s some showcasing different colours and more usual shapes and forms.
#3 Arum Lily
Zantedeschia aethiopica
Whilst we know them as Arum Lilies, of course they are not part of the Lilium family. They are the big brother of Callas, but in a league of their own.
For ease you’ll find them in the webshop with Callas. However, there are distinct differences. Zantedeschia aethiopica, or Arum lilies, are:
- larger; both taller, with longer flower heads
- They are fleshier stems are considerably less flexible
- Packed in bunches of 5 stems
Whilst they are available in a far smaller range than Calla Lilies, it’s probably fair to say there are far more varieties than you might expect.
There are currently around 24 different varieties of commercial cut flower Arum lilies. Below we’ve just shown a few, but we have a page in our Flower Library dedicated to Zantedeschia – we highly recommend you take a look – we promise you will learn lots!
#4 Digitalis | Fox Gloves
During April we’ll see the return of Digitalis, or if you prefer, fox gloves. This is another flower that we’ve seen grow in popularity and in the number of varieties available.
Where to find them?
This is one of the very seasonal flowers that you’ll discover under ‘Diverse’.
#5 Painted Fresh Foliage
Fancy a ‘pop’ of colour in your designs? Many of these foliage seem perfect for Easter, but would be right at home in designs throughout spring and summer too.
There is a wide range of painted fresh foliage (or Green Painted as you’ll find them listed in the webshop). Because they’re so visually impactful they offer great cost efficiency, they last very well and most dry very well too. All-in-all, if you’re yet to embrace coloured foliage, perhaps April the month to begin!
