The sachet - what's so special?
The sachet is produced from 100% industrial compostable film made from 2 organic layers. This means the sachet can be thrown away together with garden and organic waste. The sachet is fully industrial compostable* in 12 weeks time; just as quick as a banana or orange peel.
*This doesn’t mean it needs to be composted in a industrial facility (it can be composted as normal), it refers to the conditions of the testing – see the FAQs for further details.

What is Bio-based?
A bio-based material is a material intentionally made from substances derived from living (or once-living) organisms.
Why is the packaging sustainable?
It is certified industrial compostable film. made of predominantly plant-based material.
Is the flower food itself sustainable?
Flower food is composed of Ph regulators and nutrients and is not harmful for the environment. Pouring the left-over water down the drain is no problem.
Is the packet waterproof, what happens if it gets wet?
The sachet is watertight. It’s not recommended to leave it wet for any length of time. Therefore, because of the material it’s advised by Chrysal to put it higher up on a bunch.
How can you dispose of the packaging?
It’s safe to say you can tell your customers they can throw it away in the green bin together with the leaves and cut stems. Alternatively, if they have their own compost bins they’ll see it completely biodegrade.
How long will it take to completely decompose?
It will disintegrate after 12 weeks (no more than 10% of the packet fragments will be larger than 2mm). The sachet will completely biodegrade after six months. (That means that 90 percent or more of the material will have been converted to CO2. The remaining share is converted into water and biomass – i.e. valuable compost. without any negative effect on the composting process).

Why “Industrial compostable”?
There is currently no international standard specifying the conditions for home composting. Whereas there is a set criteria for industrial compostability of packaging. These are set out in the European standard EN 13432.
The Chrysal compostable sachet is certified according to the European norm EN 13432.
What is the criteria for the industrial "composability"?
It means the material will compost under high temperatures (>65 degrees Celsius). Industrial compostable film composts in maximum 12 weeks, which is just as long as an orange and banana peels.
Have Chrysal changed their flower food formula?
From March 10th 2021 all Chrysal’s sustainable packaging sachets will contain 99% bio-based flower food. All bio-based ingredients in the flower food are from biological renewable resources, such as plants.
What’s the difference between this and the paper sachet?
Great spot! The Chrysal Paper Sachet is made from ECF pulp and has a bio based coating. This means the sachet can be thrown away in the paper bin. So whilst it is fully recyclable it isn’t compostable.
