About Compostable Wrap

You’ve already heard that this is an eco-friendly sustainable option for your gift wrapping.

As the name suggests it’s 100% compostable. It’s perfect if you’d like to reduce your use of plastics and have a alternative to paper on hand. Unlike traditional plastic-based wraps, this compostable wrap is made from plant-based materials that break down naturally, leaving behind no harmful residue. Whilst it’s not fully waterproof, the wrap is far more rigid and durable than paper. It’ll easily withstand being wet without you having to worry that it’ll tear, damage, or generally start looking scruffy. Whilst it gives a good amount of resistance, It has a soft texture and it’s pliable and easy to work with.  Its versatility allows it to be used not only for gift-wrapping bouquets, but also for a variety of other uses within your business.

What is it made from?

It’s composed of pine and eucalyptus fibres

What happens if it gets wet?

Whilst it’s not waterproof, it will give an amount of resistance to water, certainly, more than paper. However, if you get the reel wet, do dry it as soon as you can. The guidance on storing the product is to avoid high humidity levels and direct sunlight.

I know the product is eco, but what about the packaging?

It has an inner cardboard tube which is fully recyclable. It also has a paper label, which is also able to be recycled. Both of these items can be recycled in paper recycling (dependant on the rules in your local area).

What is exactly meant by biodegradable?

Biodegradable refers to a product breaking down into natural elements, carbon dioxide, and water vapor by the organisms in an ecosystem like bacteria and fungi

How can you dispose of the compostable wrap?

Oasis Floral the company behind this products suggest the wrap can be home composted, or disposed of in general waste. However, (Whilst it will differs per country and even per county, and it’s worth you or your suggest your customers check with their local council) it’s safe to say you can tell your customers they can throw it away in the green bin together with the leaves and cut stems. Although due to it’s look it maybe that they’ll need to tell their bin men and women that they have disposed of it correctly.

Who says it’s compostable?

There are strict requirements for a product to meet ‘compostable’ standards, these are set out in the European standard EN 13432. This wrap is certified according to this standard.

How long will it take to completely degrade?

Oasis Floral Products have said it decomposes in soil within 28days. The legal requirement to meet the ‘compostable standards’ say it must disintegrate after 12 weeks (at that point no more than 10% of the wrap fragments will be larger than 2mm). The wrap must completely biodegrade after six months. (That means that 90 percent or more of the material will have been converted to CO2. The remaining share is converted into water and biomass – i.e. valuable compost. without any negative effect on the composting process).

Has Oasis floral’s compostable wrap met all the ‘compostable’ requirements?

Actually, they have surpassed the legal requirements. The wrap was shown to be 92% biodegradable in testing, higher than the target value of 90%.

Are there any other special requirements a product must meet to meet to legal standards and become ‘compostable’?

The material will compost under high temperatures (>65 degrees Celsius). Compostable wrap composts in a maximum of 12 weeks, which is just as long as an orange or a banana peel.
