Double Check Lily Grow Specialist Lilies
We’re delighted to introduce Double Check Lily. The roots of this family enterprise run very deep, as knowledge of horticulture has been passed through generations for over 100 years. The company switched to flower cultivation in 1970, but after experimenting with lilies in 1972, it all became perfectly clear: this would be the company’s future. They are one of the companies that are responsible for taking this relatively unknown flower, when cultivation was still in its infancy to the ‘Queen of flowers’ we know today.
Double Check Lily has been dedicated to mastering the art of lily cultivation for over 40 years. Their distinctive strength is staying one step ahead in every aspect of their passionate business. There is good reason why they are known as the ‘Innovators of Lily Cultivars’. They specialise in LAs, Orientals and popular ‘must-have’ varieties. However, they understand how important it is to distinguish themselves. This is why they strive to create new, commercial lily varieties, known as their ‘Innovations’ range.
How Double Check Lily go about Growing their Lilies
Given that they were at the forefront of commercial Dutch lily cultivation, it’s hardly surprising that their knowledge and experience is second to none.
Double Check Lily grow over 20 million lilies annually, making them among the biggest lily cultivators. They grow over 80 cultivar varieties throughout their 12.4 hectares of greenhouses in the Netherlands, which have been specifically designed and built for lily cultivation.
It all begins with the perfect lily bulb.
Double Check Lily work closely with a number of carefully selected bulb breeders. This ensures they select the most exquisite lily varieties and have the constant availability of the right bulbs. Only the freshest bulbs supplied from Chile and New Zealand, as well as France and the Netherlands are selected, prepared, stored and planted at precisely the right time.
The bulbs are planted by hand into crates on the planting line. These planted crates are then stored for two weeks before they go into the greenhouse. The crates are placed into the greenhouse using a machine that positions them perfectly. Their uniform rows with little space in between but with sufficient room for them to develop into beautiful, sturdy lilies.
The perfect growth climate.
To produce top-quality lilies every day the growing conditions have to be perfectly created and constantly maintained, regardless of weather conditions. Double Check Lily leads the way in applying state-of-the-art greenhouse technology. They all feature the very latest innovations, such as special glass that allows an optimal light spectrum to reach the flowers. The sunlight is supported with their LED lights.
Automated watering is carried out regularly and they are occasionally fertilised for optimal growth.
Twelve weeks of growth.
Around 12 weeks after placing the bulb crates into the greenhouse they are ready for cutting. However, within the final week before cutting they are carefully analysed. They are studied by hand around 4 or 5 times and only picked when they meet the uniform quality and equal ripeness, essential for delivering the beautiful product that’s synonymous with Double Check Lily.
The Cutting & Sorting Process
Each lily is cut by hand and makes its way from the greenhouse to the shed via the conveyor belt. They are manually sorted, with stems not meeting the high standard being removed. Stems are selected for bunches of 10, either with 4 heads per stem or 3 heads for different bunches, with their heads neatly gathered together before progressing to the bunching line machine. This machine sorts them to length, defoliates, and uniformly cuts the stem ends to length. Finally, they reach the binding section, where an elastic band is wrapped around them, before they are sleeved.
Presentation and transportation
The sleeves have been carefully designed to provide a cover that is light, breathable, and protects the lilies from damage during transport. They ensure the cover is not too tight and the flowers have enough space to breathe, both within the sleeves and the buckets. 4 bunches are carefully placed into a bucket in a way so they are neatly upright and all the sleeves are facing forwards to be clearly seen. As well as protection, the sleeves are a distinguishing feature and provide the excellent presentation reflecting the quality of Double Check lilies.
The bunched lilies in their buckets go on their final conveyor belt journey to the area where they are ready to be prepared into batches, either for direct orders or the auction. 12 buckets are usually placed on a trolley, as an important final double-checking process takes place. An inspection to ensure there are no breakages, that the quality is there, that they are neat, generally meeting the high standards that the customer knows to expect from Double Check Lily.
Each bucket is labelled and each trolley has supporting documents, essential information to ensure that every order and bucket goes to the correct place. There can be up to 7 different varieties of lilies on a trolley for a customer. Double Check Lily transport their own product with their trucks holding up to 20 trolleys. Each trolley is carefully loaded in the truck with utmost care, so that our flowers are perfectly protected during transport. Using their own transportation not only guarantees the lilies are delivered safely, but also quickly. Whether it is Rijnsburg, Aalsmeer or Naaldwijk, or directly to customers like our buying partners in Holland to fulfil orders you may have placed. As soon as the delivery is completed, they quickly return, ready to transport the next shipment of beautiful lilies!

Breeding & Growing the New Lily Varieties
As Double Check Lily have such a close partnership with a number of carefully selected leading bulb breeders they are often one of the first involved in the selection of new varieties. This has led to their lily assortment developing significantly in recent years. Where there were once just three varieties – Oriental, Asiatic and Longiflorum – their assortment now includes numerous new varieties due to cross-breeding and embryo rescue, as shown in the varieties above.
Breeding a new variety is an exceptionally specialist and lengthy process. It takes an average of 7 years to produce a viable volume of lily bulbs from the first seed. Double Check Lily carefully monitors all developments and is not only well placed, but also has the clear vision and foresight to make excellent choices that lead to a perfect assortment.

Sort codes:
Sort codes provide information about each flower sold, this is because whilst every flower of the same variety (and product code) might be the same in many ways, they can still be very different in others.

Final Thoughts
When you buy a Double Check Lily it’s hard not to be impressed with the quality, however, after taking in all that information we’d imagine you can’t help but be even more bowled over by them.
It’s clear to see just how they are true masters of lilies. Dedicated to growing the very best quality lilies in a sustainable and responsible way.
We know what an outstanding, quality, reliable flower Double Check Lily produce and we know they’re a firm florist favourite too. However, we really wanted to share some more information about the passionate growers and breeders and the commitment they have to bring you their most superior quality, strong, and beautiful lilies.
Whilst we at Westflor also care deeply about the flowers we provide to you, it’s fair to say we don’t have quite the same relationship with them. You could consider the growers to be the parents of the lilies they grow. As florists you too have a unique relationship with the flowers; you handcraft them into a whole host of stunning floral designs. Whilst the lilies grown by Double Check Lily may be grown in Holland, it doesn’t mean that your relationship isn’t a close one – it really is – it’s intrinsically linked.
Knowing about the growers and the information of how the flowers are grown can be hugely beneficial to you in so many ways. You can share these details with your own customers and audience. In marketing it’s generally referred to as ‘storytelling’ although this isn’t just a commercial ploy, but a way of communicating both relatable and memorable details.
People buy from people and sharing the story of how Double Check Lily grow their lilies that you use within your own business will highlight you as real experts and so much more. It’s engaging and often memorable content that will connect with people on an emotional level, in turn building trust and rapport with your customers and audience.
Whilst Double Check Lily provide their lilies through FloraHolland to many suppliers and florists, how many of them share the details you now know? Whether you mention the odd details to customers in your premises or put out some info in a blog or social media post, providing details will set you apart and in turn make your business more memorable.
Of course it’s not just your customers that will find this interesting, sharing details with your team can reap rewards too. Not to mention it’s an easy way to remember your preferred growers so you can buy from them more frequently.
In short, we hope you’ve enjoyed reading about them and the lilies they grow. However, if you still want to know more, we’d love to hear from you.
