Why is Easter so Special?
Easter falls early in 2024 on Sunday 31st March. Spring is in the air and it’s the first bank holiday of the new year. Three quarters of us Brits celebrate Easter, it’s the perfect opportunity to get together with family and friends as so many enjoy the long weekend. This means there a lot of opportunity for sales. It previously hasn’t been the biggest flower moment, but reach shows it climbing the list.
The Reality for Florists
For florists it’s always two weeks after Mother’s Day, it can feel like you’ve barely recovered from that, when another potentially good occasion for sales is knocking at your door. However, whilst it maybe here before you know it, it’s ripe for the picking and we urge you to make the most of it! Don’t believe us? Last year Brits spent over £960 million over Easter.

Whites & Greens
Classic, Pure and Innocent
Purity and grace are symbolised with white colour schemes. Whilst many British people see Easter more about eggs and less about religion, it’s one of the major Christian festival of the year. Most churches use longiflorum lilies or Easter lilies as they’re often called (especially at Easter) in their pure white form. We won’t get into the debate of whether white is a colour, but one thing is for sure add in the zesty green and it make for a very fresh combination.

There are many colours associated with Easter, but would you agree that yellow and purple tones are the traditional ones?
Easter is thought to be named after the Pagan Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre. The Spring Equinox was the time to celebrate spring, and fertility in her honour. She’s the pagan fertility goddess of humans and crops – the symbols representing fertility being hares and eggs and the traditional colours of the festival are green, yellow and purple. It’s all sounding very Easter-y don’t you think?
Purple is also the most prominent colour during Lent (ending at Easter) and gold is associated with the Jesus’ Resurrection.
Florist probably know more than most the extraordinary range of seasonal yellow and purple toned flowers available at spring time.

An Beautifully Decorated Easter Table

Wooden slice Easter arrangement
This is an interesting, different type of design. Not just as a table centre, but in general. Most of the materials are plants; contained into eggs shells keeping them upright. The arrangement included:
- Narcissus tete-a-tete bulbs with soil – placed into a chicken egg shell
- Dianthus plant (or part of a plant) – again, place into a shell
- Convallaria or lily of the valley – still with roots in soil in another shell. The final plant is part of a
- Seadom succulent – cascading out of a shell on it’s side
- A double tulip head – is recessed on the base, nestled in an unopened
- Viburnum tynus flower head. The design is completed with a cluster of
- quail eggs and a few strands of
- Betula; silver birch – which add some movement. All are featured on top of
- blanket moss, with a foundation of a
- Slice of wood
This is a long lasting design. It’s a modern day Pot-et-fleur; as it has the addition of the fresh tulip head. Eggs make the perfect vessel for the plants; waterproof, easily available and perhaps best of all (probably) free!
Is this something you could recreate? It certainly shares some different ideas providing some food for thought.

Another angle, more things to notice. Including this table setting brings every thing you might sell together:
- Flowers stems placed into a range of different;
- Glass vases of different styles and colours
- Potted hyacinth – simply and naturally wrapped in hessian
- Arrangements – as shown in the last slide
- Candles in holders with coordinating bronze look stalk figurines

← Natural Easter egg
A natural egg created with flat or blanket moss (we have this available in an ever-lasting option in our sundries section, as well as fresh being available). A single stem of Fritillaria meleagris or snakes head fritillary bound on with a piece of decorative wire, which has also been fashioned into a type of egg cup.

Eggs, but this time they’re real and have been decorated with flowers. An alternative to painting eggs. Whilst we’re confident this isn’t something you’ll have time for as a professional florist, it’s a idea you could share with your social media audience? Final thoughts
More than ever before people love their homes and having them look beautiful, Easter provides the perfect opportunity to do this. Whilst it originally started as an religious festival, is now more an occasion to gather together, providing ever more reason for your customers to make their homes more festive.
