Why is Easter so Special?

Easter falls on Sunday 20th April this year and marks the first bank holiday of the new year – a full 107 days since our last bank holiday (New Years Day until Good Friday)!

People in the UK are ready for a longer weekend break, to get out and about, and together with family and friends – Easter provides that perfect opportunity, especially as it’s officially spring and we have longer evenings with the clocks having already changed (unlike last year).

All this means there’s a lot of opportunity for sales, with the right marketing push. It previously wasn’t the biggest flower moment, but research shows it climbing the list and with three-quarters of us Brits celebrating Easter, it’s worth a bit of effort to capture your customers’ imagination and sales!

The Reality for Florists

For florists it’s always two weeks after Mother’s Day. As you read this, it may feel like you’ve barely recovered when another potentially good occasion for sales is knocking at your door. However, you still have time to make the most of the opportunity! It’s ripe for the picking and and well worth the effort! Don’t believe us? Last year Brits spent 1.3 billion over Easter. What’s more, there’s an ongoing trend of increased spending year after year.

Time to wake up!

In contrast to the pastel schemes above, these vibrant designs are attention grabbing showstoppers. They reflect the world coming alive again after winter. As the days grow longer, we all become more active — spring cleaning, gardening, meeting friends, and taking trips away. Easter marks the start of all this activity, and these bold, bright flowers mirror that renewed sense of movement and life.

Whites & Greens

Classic, Pure and Innocent

Purity and grace are symbolised with white colour schemes. Whilst many Brits see Easter more about eggs than religion, it’s one of the major Christian festival of the year. Most churches use longiflorum lilies or Easter lilies as they’re often called (especially at Easter) in their pure white form. We won’t get into the debate of whether white is a colour, but one thing is for sure add in the zesty green and it make for a very fresh combination.

Do these colour say Easter to you?

There are many colours associated with Easter, but would you agree that yellow and purple tones are the traditional ones?

Easter is thought to be named after the Pagan Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre. The Spring Equinox was the time to celebrate spring, and fertility in her honour. She’s the pagan fertility goddess of humans and crops – the symbols representing fertility being hares and eggs. The traditional colours of the festival are green, yellow, and purple. It’s all sounding very Easter-y, don’t you think?

Purple is also the most prominent colour during Lent (which ends at Easter), and gold is associated with the Jesus’ Resurrection.

Florist probably know more than most the extraordinary range of yellow and purple seasonal flowers available at this time of year.
