You might know the flower groups, but do you know the varieties we’re sharing this month?

So, if you’re ready, here we go with the 5 Top Cut Flowers for August! As always, we share expert insights into this month’s hottest offerings and not-to-be missed flowers.

#1 Clematis

Clematis Amazing Tokyo

Oh, Clematis how beautiful you are. Can you remember a time when these graceful beauties weren’t part of the everyday line up of flowers available?

Whilst most of these naturally summer-flowering varieties are now available throughout the year, some are grown in considerably larger numbers during the summer months, making them far more accessible. That’s why they’re one of our top picks for August.

Our friends at Marginpar produce 99.9% of all cut Clematis available. These are grown in Tanzania, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Occasionally, there are also Dutch-grown Clematis available in small numbers during August

Regardless of where they’re grown, they are a beautiful addition — both to any design and this month’s ‘Top 5 Flowers’.

#2 Garden Roses

The selection of Garden style roses is quite extraordinary now. No longer are we restricted to a handful of varieties.

Many of the varieties are for extended periods throughout the year, some all year round. The Vip Roses’ production in Holland is available between April and November. Wans Roses, located in Germany, has a year round operation with their main season from March to the end of October.

Below we’re showcasing a very small selection from Vip Roses and Wans Roses. Keep reading to see how you can enjoy more of their varieties.

#3 Veronica

They may not be the largest or most attention-grabbing flower, but Veronica add a dainty spike form that can bring a design to life quite unlike any other flower.

Having said that, as can be seen from the images below, there are now varieties that don’t really have that pointing form – step up Smart: Fountain, Splash, or Wave.

#4 Celosia

When we say Celosia, you’ll likely think of the crinkled-edge varieties — whether that’s the globe-type ‘Captain’ range or the more fan-shaped selection from groups such as ‘Act’ and ‘Reprise’.

You’ll find these varieties — all part of the ‘Celosia argentea cristata’ group, commonly known as Cockscombs — available throughout most of the year.

However, there are other types with shorter seasons that need to be snapped up whilst they’re available.

So, let’s celebrate:

  • Celosia Plumosa — The most popular range of the ‘Celosia argentea plumosa’ group are the ‘Sunday’ varieties.

  • Celosia Spicata — These are the multi-headed, pointy spray Celosia. An example of their full name would be ‘Celosia spicata celway’ White.

Celosia Plumosa Sunday Gold
Celosia Reprise Yellow
Celosia Captain Dark Orange
Celosia Plumosa Sunday Dark Pink
Celosia Act Verda Green
Celosia Act Rima Rose
Celosia Celway Red
Celosia Captain Scarlet

There’s nothing quite like enjoying seasonal flowers whilst they’re available — so make sure you snap up these Celosia in August. Remember to allow plenty of airflow around them and, whilst their fleshy stem may lead you to believe otherwise, they prefer a shallower vase of water.

#5 Alstroemeria

How many different varieties do you use?

Once upon a time when you said ‘Alstroemeria’ you knew exactly what type of variety you’d get… fast forward to now and we have a range of Alstroemeria the likes of which we couldn’t imagine 15 years ago.

We’ve showcased a range of varieties from groups including: standard, Florinca & specialities including the single headed Fashionista®.

Take a few moments to allow the images to scroll through and appreciate how the range of Alstroemeria we now have available is very diverse.

The names of each variety can be found by hovering over the scrolling images. Alternatively, tap on the images, to open them in a lightbox, with the names shown under each image as you swipe or tap to move to the next.

Obviously this only shows a fraction of the range available to buy this August and throughout the year.
