Introducing Viva La Vida

Viva La Vida is one of the four key trends that the experts have shared for 2024.

It’s brought to our attention by our friends at The Flower Council of Holland who work in partnership with other organisations in our sector. Together they to bring us the latest trends with a clear focus on using them within the flower and plant world, but we’ll see the trends in so many places.

Viva la Vida is Spanish for Long Live Life and it’s born out of the current context around us.

The FCH explain “There is enough trouble in the world to make anyone feel miserable and negative. Some people cope with these feelings by withdrawing from the big bad world and occasionally celebrating life. Viva La Vida captures this sentiment: cheerful and exuberant, and full of passion, colour and expressiveness.”

Core values of this trend

Warmth, excitement, cheerfulness, expressiveness, colourful, passionate, spicy and decorative.

Viva La Vida colour palette

This kind of trend naturally features a warm and exuberant colour palette. They are pink, red, Viva Magenta (Pantone colour of the year 2023), orange and bright yellow. These colours are also found in the flowers, plants and accessories.  These shades are perfect for accessories and large elements, both indoors and outdoors.

As the images testify this trend features a warm, lively and exuberant colour palette. We’re talking about a palette that just screams joy and positivity. Essential colours are pinks, reds, vibrant Viva Magenta (that rich colour that was Pantone’s 2023 colour of the year), oranges, and bright yellows can also feature heavily. These hues aren’t just splashed on canvases; they’re the stars of the show in flowers, plants, and all those little accessories that make arrangements pop. Accent colours in this palette are a splash of black, some rich Marsala brown or maybe even a bright mint green. They ensure the colour palette has the extra oomph, they’re like the cherry on top, perfect for jazzing up everything from indoor décor to outdoor displays.

The trend’s product ingredients

Alright, let’s talk shapes! This trend keeps things simple and smooth but that’s not to say that there’s not plenty of pizzazz, as these simple and smooth shapes are generally made up of eye-catching materials giving the objects a unique decorative look & feel. Fringes and tassels are ideal for this trend and absolutely the icing on the cake, adding that final flourish.

Natural materials are very much part of this trend and help create that decorative ambiance. Picture decorative tiles, mosaic, and braided reeds and raffia. And let’s not forget those textiles with frayed edges, frills, and, you guessed it, fringes! Add in some pigmented wood and wrought iron with intricate patterns, and you’ve got yourself a recipe for decorative success, perfectly in keeping with this trend.

As for the designs, well, they’re as vibrant and varied as they come. From classic to modern, there’s something for everyone. And if you’re wondering where all this creativity stems from, look no further than Spain and Mexico – they are clearly the sources of inspiration for this decorative journey.

Flowers in this trend

Now, let’s talk flowers. When it comes to floral arrangements, colour is the magic word, it’s everything. Think lavish, extravagant hues, like you’re celebrating a fiesta every day. When it comes to the flower forms, there is nothing unapologetic here either, don’t hold back – the more dramatic, the better, just look at the image above. So, whether you’re creating this boldness with a voluminous and full bouquet or a few single eye-catching flowers, what ever design you create within this trend, make sure it’s a scene-stealer.

And let’s not forget about our leafy friends – so many bold blooming houseplants are perfect for this trend, providing that final touch of lushness to a vibrant space.

Picture yourself on a Southern-inspired patio, where decorative wrought iron accents are making a stylish comeback. Here, cheerful hues dance hand in hand with romance, creating an atmosphere that’s nothing short of enchanting.
